In most cases, a single-bay car port should be small enough that it will not require planning permission before it can be installed. This is because the work will fall within the terms of permitted development. As such, if you are only planning on installing a single-storey, one-bay or two-bay design, then it is highly likely that you will not need planning permission or Building Regulations approval to go ahead with the work.
If you know that you will need something larger than this, perhaps with a raised eaves height or a dual-pitched roof, then you will need to speak to your local authority. This is because bigger, more complex structures will often fall outside of the terms of permitted development. There are also regulations in place for property owners who wish to build on designated land (e.g. a national park, a conservation area, or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
